Warm Up America

http://www.warmupamerica.org/whatIsWUA.htm

Warm Up America! (WUA!) is an organization made up of volunteers who create handmade afghan blankets, clothing and accessories to help those in need. These items provide warmth and comfort to people who have lost their homes, fled abusive relations, or are being cared for in hospices, shelters, hospitals, and nursing home.

How it works...
Volunteers donate their time to crochet and knit a 7" X 9" rectangle (or more). Sections are either joined by individuals or groups in a community and donated locally or sent to Foundation headquarters for joining and distribution.

The beauty of so many different participants is that a WUA! afghan resembles a patchwork quilt of many colors and textures,

Who receives the afghans?
WUA! afghans are distributed to individuals and families in need through community service organizations as well as through chapters of national organizations such as the American Red Cross. Sponsors of WUA! in communities around the country are encouraged to donate completed afghans within their own community in the true spirit of "neighbor helping neighbor." Agencies to which the Foundation has donated afghans include:

Women's shelters
Nursing homes
Children's hospitals
Hospitals and hospices
Daycare centers
Veterans' homes
Churches
AIDS facilities
Homeless shelters
American Red Cross chapters

For the rest of the details see link above.

My working is doing this. So if anyone wants in. Let me know. My work will be very happy and greatfull to have some of your craftmenship. Donated.

My daughters quilt guild is very large and they do all their community projects making quilts for Safe Space (Abused womens shelter)  and for the nursing home residents.  Sorry Wendy, my artsy craftsy side never developed real well.  Have never learned how to do this stuff.  Sounds like a nice idea tho.

Ok if no one wants to make suares. You can make a prayer shawlinstead. Knitt verison. I have the crochet one also.

PRAYER SHAWL:
Loosely chain about 43 stitches.
First row
Half-double crochet in third chain from hook and in each chain across.
Repeated row
Chain 2, turn. Half-double crochet in each half-double crochet across.

Work about 2½ skeins in this pattern. Use the rest of the yarn for fringe, which can be from 3 inches to 9 inches long. Knot the ends of the fringes to keep the yarn from frizzing.

SHAWL:Crochet

24X60 inches

same dirstions above
